This course introduces the principles, components and techniques in optical communication systems. It covers light propagation in optical fibers, sources and detectors, fiber losses and dispersion, optical modulation, multiplexing and system performance. Emphasis is placed on practical considerations in the design, operation of optical communication systems for high-capacity, long distance communication.
